Target Audience
The content of this activity is designed to meet the needs of the following target audience: phlebologists, general surgeons, vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, interventional cardiologists, vascular medicine practitioners, dermatologists, dermatologic surgeons, family practice and internal medicine practitioners, plastic surgeons, obstetricians and gynecologists, cardiologists, and any other healthcare professional currently or planning on treating patients with venous disease.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity participants will be able to:
- Discuss the evidence for using compression following venous procedures in patients with mixed venous-arterial ulcerations, and in patients with edema.
- Explain that pressure exerted by a compression product on the extremity depends on the elastic properties of the material. Starting from the same resting pressure a stiff, inelastic material produces much higher pressure during standing and walking. This higher dynamic pressure is the reason for the more pronounced hemodynamic efficiency of stiff material.
- Describe the rationale for and potential benefits of compression that is not graduated.
- Recognize that compression results in hemodynamic changes and stimulates the production of important mediators, which both contribute to its effectiveness.
